Visiting a church for the first time can be a scary thing. In theory, it shouldn't be scary at all, but our minds are often plagued by the fear of the unknown. We ask ourselves questions like, "Will everyone stare at me when I walk in? What if I'm not dressed right? What if I do something to embarrass myself during the worship service?"
Relax. You're not alone. Everyone wonders these very same things.
Several years ago, a young couple stopped by a church on a Sunday morning. They hadn't been to church since they were children, but they wanted to start going again, especially because they now had children of their own. They pulled into the parking lot and sat in their car - too afraid to get out. They sat there so long that they finally decided they might as well go back home.
They repeated this pattern several weeks in a row until one Sunday, they worked up enough courage to walk inside. Once inside, they were greeted by friendly people and they spent time as a family, singing, praying, learning and worshipping. They enjoyed it so much that they began attending regularly and in the process, their faith in God was encouraged and their family grew stronger.
This is a true story that illustrates a condition that many of us have found ourselves in. We want to grow spiritually. We want to develop a stronger faith in God and raise our children to do the same, but we struggle to take concrete steps to make that happen.
